HTC are poised for a pincer move on the smartphone market this year that looks like they will be topping charts at both the entry-level and topflight ends of the mobile market this season.

Thanks to a single piece aluminium body the HTC Legend is as sturdy as it is beautiful and thanks to a 600Mhz processor and 512MB RAM it can skip through multiple and simultaneous applications.

Navigation is via a slick optical trackpad and a gorgeous super-bright AMOLED 3.2” capacitive touchscreen, so flicking between contacts, web pages and your media-centre is a synch.

Design-wise the Legend is a natural progression from the HTC Hero, which after garnering awards from a host of tech blogs, magazines and taste-makers, proved to be last year’s runaway success.

Once again, in 2010 expect to see the Legend give the iPhone a run for Apple’s money.

It’s not just at the top-flight that HTC have aimed their sights though: identifying a slow uptake of data services at the entry-level end of the market, HTC decided to create a handset that brings all functionality of a smart phone to people on a budget, with precious little compromises on experience: HTC Smart.

The HTC Smart runs on a lightweight operating system – Brew MP, which optimizes data usage for the handset’s entry-level specs. So, while the Smart lacks smartphone hardware under the hood, it still has a few tricks up it’s sleeve that allow the user to experience the web on-the-go.

Both handsets use HTC’s brilliantly simple and intuitive Sense UI so your conversations, whether they take place online, over the phone or over SMS, are all threaded into one ‘Friend-feed’.

So, with both the HTC Legend and HTC Smart, it looks as if 2010 is the year the Taiwanese manufacturer really get into their stride… a stride that spans from the entry-level and right to the top-of-the-range of the mobile device market.
